Kurinuki literally means 'to hollow' or 'to carve out', and in ceramics, it refers to the slow meditative process of carving from a single block of clay, resulting in pottery that is unique every time.
The Kurinuki technique dates back to medieval Japanese times, where it was used to make ceramic objects for the tea ceremony.
